Part 4: How carers can help in consultations
13 out of 13What is my family member/friend learning?
Your carer will be watching two more short videos about Tony and his wife Jane.
- In the first video, they are attending his second radiation oncology consultation. The video provides examples of how a carer can help manage information in a consultation, including making notes, bringing and using a question list, and helping with the treatment planning.
- In the second video, Jane and Tony are in a later consultation, and Jane is advocating for the doctor to meet the psychological needs of Tony.
As these two videos are about specific carer skills, they do not form a part of eTRIO-p.
Your carer will also learn skills to be an effective advocate, should the situation arise. Of course, before advocating on your behalf, they are encouraged to discuss this with you first. Your carer has been given information about the steps to being an advocate, such as :
- Introducing the issue to the health professional
- Explaining why it is important
- Asking for, or suggesting, a solution
