How carers can help during the consultation:

There are many ways carers can contribute during the consultation that we will go through on this page and the following.

Carers can provide support:

Many patients find it helpful when carers provide emotional support in the waiting room and consultation. This includes showing they care for you, helping to keep you company (and entertained) during long waiting times, and being understanding and empathetic.

Carers can help manage information:

Your carer can help you to find out information from health professionals. It is ok for your carer to questions, ask the health professional to explain something, take notes, or ask for clarification. In some situations it can be helpful for two carers to attend the consultation (particularly if an important decision needs to be made). One carer can take notes, so the other can be more actively listening and discussing.

Carers can help provide information:

It is important that health professionals are able to get important information about their patient. If needed, your carer can help provide information about your medical and family history, and your lifestyle.
