Part 4: How carers can help in consultations
8 out of 13ACTIVITY: If you're feeling confused in a consultation
Sometimes in medical consultations, it can be challenging to understand the information a health professional is discussing with you. The following exercise will help you to figure useful ways you or your family carer could react if you are feeling confused about what the doctor is saying.
Sort the following responses to feeling confused, by dragging and dropping them into the “Effective” and “Ineffective” categories below. You will be given feedback as you go along, and you can keep sorting until you get all the answers correct.
-
- Ask the doctor to repeat what they said.
- Stop listening
- Try repeating back important pieces of information to the doctor.
-
- Ask the doctor to explain it in a different way.
- Stay silent and let the doctor continue, you don’t want to waste their time.
- Ask for some material to read at home
-
- Interrupt the doctor and tell them that they are being confusing and unclear.
