Part 5: Carer roles during a consultation
2 out of 10Support the patient:
Many patients find it helpful when carers provide emotional support in the waiting room and consultation. This includes showing you care for the patient, are there for them, and being understanding and empathetic.
It can be hard to know what might help in these stressful situations, but common things that some patients appreciate include:
- Keeping the patient company while waiting for the appointment
- Providing a distraction while waiting, such as bringing along a crossword, magazine, or newspaper to read together.
- Sitting with the patient and holding their hand
- Reassuring them that you are there for them and love them
- Supporting their emotions- allowing the patient to be sad or anxious. It’s not your responsibility (or realistic) to keep them happy all of the time. Allow the patient to express their emotions without judgement.
