Part 5: Carer roles during a consultation
10 out of 10Allow the patient to discuss sensitive information:
- Some people find it hard to discuss sensitive topics (such as the impact of treatment on sexual function, their bowel and bladder function, their mental health) in front of a carer.
- It may be good for you to offer to briefly leave the room if the patient and doctor want to have a private talk.
- Briefly leaving the room doesn’t mean you are being excluded, or are not wanted in the consultation. It is just that some topics are easier to discuss with only your doctor.
TOP TIP: Openly acknowledging that you are happy to step outside for any sensitive discussions can help to reduce any feelings of awkwardness or discomfort.
