Guiding principle

Remain alert to patient and family preferences for family involvement

  • Taking notice of the how the patient and family member interact and react to each other can help you better understand their relationship dynamics.
  • Remain alert for signs of patient dissatisfaction with their family’s involvement 24,33, including:
    • Patient appearing frustrated with the family member’s contributions,
    • Patient being interrupted by their family member, and/or
    • Patient unable to voice own wishes.
  • Remain alert for signs of family carer dissatisfaction with their own level of involvement for example:
    • Family carer appearing frustrated that they cannot contribute, and/or
    • Family carer appearing overwhelmed that they are required to assume an active role.
