While engaging with the family is important, ensure the patient remains the primary focus of the consultation
- Including the family, while also putting the patient first, is a balancing act.
- Avoid extended exclusive conversations with the family carer as this may make the patient feel left out (known as "forming a coalition"). 25,26
- It is perfectly appropriate to focus on your patient, but throughout the consultation try to make an effort to check in with the family carer.
