5 out of 8ACTIVITY: Encouraging patient support for important consultations
In your response, did you consider?
- You don’t want to panic Gloria, the liver metastases are only suspected at this stage.
- However, if the cancer has spread, Tim’s emotional and informational support for Gloria would be valuable.
Here are two responses from experts in the field. Reflect on how you feel about these responses.
“As you know, the liver tests are a little abnormal. It’s possible that this is related to the chemo, but it may indicate cancer in the liver. We’re doing a CT scan of the liver, to see if there’s an abnormality there. We’ll aim to do the scan on one day, and catch up on the next, so you don’t have to wait long for the results. I know you’re worried about the scan result. Can you bring someone with you, as extra support and an extra pair of ears?” - Medical Oncologist
“I am organizing scans because I am concerned that your cancer may be progressing (i.e. you need to provide explanation why you are ordering the test) it can be stressful reviewing results of the tests alone would you like anyone to come with you?” - Medical Oncologist
