- Remind patients that family are welcome to attend consultations. 23
"Some patients find having a family member attend the consultation as well to be helpful, particularly remembering information. You are welcome to bring a family member or friend to the appointment with you. Of course, it’s your choice though"
- Ask if there are any barriers to family attending consultations (e.g. work/family commitments, geographical distance). 24
“Would you prefer your daughter to attend these consultations with you? Is there anything getting in the way of her coming?”
- If barriers are identified, try to find solutions so that the family carer is able to be involved, e.g:
- Offer to include the family via teleconference.
- Offer to audio-record the consultation for the family carer to listen to later 22,25,26.
