Guideline 11: Family carers displaying dominance
9 out of 11Specific strategies
Respectfully attempt to contain the dominant family carer through suggesting some roles they can take on in the consultation
- Clarify useful roles the carer can take on in the consultation, so that they can still feel that they are contributing.
- Carer roles may include providing emotional support, taking notes, recalling information, or helping the patient with admin (e.g. completing paperwork, arranging appointments).
“[Addressing family carer] It’s clear that you care about [patient] very much. [Patient] has made it clear that [he/she] would prefer to take an active role in the consultation and decisions. To support this, it can be helpful if family members take notes about what we discuss and the information about the treatment options. Would you be happy to do this?”.
