Try to understand if the family dominance/control is wanted or unwanted
Observe verbal and non-verbal interactions between the patient and family carer for signs of unwanted family dominance 33, including:
Verbal signs
- Interruptions
- Dominating discussions
- Disagreement
- Raised voice
- Sharp tone
Non-verbal signs
- Patient appearing frustrated e.g. eye rolling, shaking head, closed posture
- Patient appearing disempowered e.g. not engaging in eye contact/conversation, looking to the family carer before speaking
