Try to understand if the family dominance/control is wanted or unwanted

Observe verbal and non-verbal interactions between the patient and family carer for signs of unwanted family dominance 33, including:

Verbal signs
Non-verbal signs

Verbal signs

  • Interruptions
  • Dominating discussions
  • Disagreement
  • Raised voice
  • Sharp tone

Non-verbal signs

  • Patient appearing frustrated e.g. eye rolling, shaking head, closed posture
  • Patient appearing disempowered e.g. not engaging in eye contact/conversation, looking to the family carer before speaking
