Part 2: Introduction to cancer care
4 out of 6What are the rights of patients and carers in the Australian Healthcare System?
Rights of patients
The Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights sets out what patients can expect from the Australian Healthcare system.
Recognition of carers
Carers are also highly valued within the Australian healthcare system, and health professionals should respect the important roles of carers and treat them with respect.
The Carer Recognition Act (2010) aims to increase awareness and recognition of carers.
It includes important guidance for health professionals who interact with a patient’s carer. It says that:
- Carers should be acknowledged as individuals with their own needs within and beyond the caring role.
- The relationship between carers and the persons for whom they care should be recognised and respected.
- Carers should be considered as partners with health professionals in providing care for the patient.
- Carers have unique knowledge and experiences.
- Carers should be treated with dignity and respect.
- Support for carers should be timely, responsive, appropriate and easy to access.
