Specific Strategies

Remain alert for cues indicating the family member needs emotional support

  • Look for indicators of distress 24-26,33, including:
    • Verbal cues e.g. “I’m having a tough time coping with [patient’s] diagnosis” and “I get so upset sometimes that I can’t stop crying”.
    • Para verbal and non-verbal cues e.g. crying, distressed vocal tone, looking down, fidgeting, closed posture, sighing.
