LEARNING OUTCOMES: In this section, you will consider how to manage communicating sensitive information when family are present and reflect on how to proceed if a family carer requests patient information.

Introduction

  • While family carer involvement is important, it should not come at the cost of patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Two common difficulties which can arise when family are involved, are:
    • Family requests for patient information without patient consent, and
    • Discussing sensitive issues (e.g. sexuality, prognosis) with patients when family are present.
