Part 1: The importance of carers

2 out of 8

Why is good communication with the healthcare team important?

  • Good communication can prepare everyone for the treatment ahead.
  • It is important that both you and the patient understand information about the cancer and treatment process.
  • Doctors and nurses need to understand their patients and carers needs and wishes, so that they can provide personalised care and treatment.
  • During cancer care, important treatment decisions may need to be made, and it is important that you and the patient are able to share your thoughts and preferences.
  • Sometimes, you might need to speak up for the patient. Knowing how to do this respectfully and effectively can be really helpful.
