Our research studies have found that carers usually fit within one of four types, which are represented on the spectrum below.

In most situations, it is not appropriate for a carer to dominate or take over the patient’s treatment decision, as it is ultimately the patient's body and their choice, and they must provide consent for any treatments they have. Only where the patient is unable to make an informed decision, or they have asked a carer to take over, is it okay to do so.
TOP TIP: The majority of patients prefer their carers to be in the middle of the spectrum, as either “supporters” or “partners” in making decisions. Talking openly and honestly about their role in decision-making can be very helpful.
