Part 3: Including carers in consultations
3 out of 4Managing how information is shared
Have a think about how much medical information you would like to be shared with your carer.
It is completely up to you how much information is disclosed to your carer, and whether you are comfortable with you carer having discussions with the health professional without you present. For example:
Ming a woman who has been diagnosed with lung cancer wants her daughter Lily to be involved in all conversations and care, and is happy for her daughter to speak to the health professionals separately.
On the other hand, Joseph, a man diagnosed with leukaemia, values the support of his family particularly his partner Charlie - but does not want medical information to be shared with anyone in his family without him present and a part of the conversation.
TOP TIP: Whether you feel comfortable with your carer having separate conversations with your health professionals is completely up to you, and either way is perfectly fine. It can be useful to highlight to your doctor how you wish information and separate discussions to be managed.
