Part 1: The importance of carers
5 out of 7Who should be involved in a patient’s care?
- Having one or two carers attend a consultation can be beneficial, however, sometimes more than this might be impractical. Have a think about who might be the best person/people to attend your consultations.
- Whilst it would be ideal for the same carer/s to attend consultations (for consistency), this may not be possible for some people. In this situation there may be 2 or 3 carers who share the role.
- If there are a few carers sharing the role, it can be helpful if they communicate (with your permission) with each other to keep up to date about the medical information and decisions.
- It can be helpful to accept (or ask for) help from a wider network of your family, friends and acquaintances. Often, family and friends want to help out, and letting them know what you need is very useful.
On the next page is an optional activity that can help you map out who to involve in your care and support.
